St Albans

Abbey Gateway Orchestra

Our Conductor

Martin Beach became the orchestra's Principal Conductor and Artistic Director in 1987. He is currently Head of Performing Arts at Marlborough School in St Albans. Martin studied the flute at the Royal Academy of Music and afterwards went to Newton Park College, Bath, where he gained a teaching certificate, with distinction, in music. He was conductor of the Intermediate Youth Orchestra of St Albans Music School for a number of years.

In addition, we have a Deputy Conductor, Margaret Johnstone. Margaret studied at the Royal College of Music and teaches piano, clarinet and flute locally, as well as playing the organ and choral singing. She also directs the "Cantilena" ladies choir.

Other members of the orchestra and guests have been encouraged to conduct and rehearse solos on a number of occasions.
